Kari Wuhrer's Lust For Life!

Now don't sneer when you hear about Kari Wuhrer's problem: The 32 year-old star of the time-travel drama "Sliders" may just be a tad too thin. "Well I'm 5 foot 5 inches tall", says the brunette vixen who got her start as the Vanna White of MTV's hip game show "Remote Control", "and right now I'm about 103 pounds." I bet you're thinking: Get real.

Wuhrer has a problem most women would die for. "But I was up to 120 pounds about 4 years ago when I got married. When you're in love and everything seems to be so comforting, I got comfortably heavier. I'm divorced now so I'm a couple pounds below my ideal weight of 106 pounds.

Divorce and a very hectic schedule that includes playing Maggie Beckett on "Sliders", a new album "Shiny", and a booming film career, has left little time for fitness strategy. "Because of my schedule, I've been doing a lot of cardio - running a lot, so the weight has been coming off. I'm actually trying to gain some weight right now through muscle mass and I have this incredible trainer, Skip (Falconer from "Ultra Body Fitness") who takes care of me, both my mine and body. I believe you have to take care of the inside to get good results on the outside."

While Kari rocks our world as the sci-fi soldier who kicks butt on TV, up close and personal, Kari kicks butt in the gym and in the canyons near her home. "Yeah, I do the gym thing and I also like to hike in the canyons because they're so beautiful. The good thing about having a trainer is I don't have to think about how to work around the gym. I can just concentrate on my breathing and isolation of muscle groups." Her gym routine is basic but brutal. Working out three days a week, Kari begins each routine with a 15-20 minute warm up of Treadmill or jumping/skipping rope.

Then it's on to grunt exercises pairing up large muscle groups with a small one. Mondays is chest and biceps; Wednesdays are back and triceps; while Fridays are just quads. This is Kari's "Power Week" using 25-40 pounds and doing 3-4 sets of 15 repetitions. The next week it's lighter weights, usually around 20 pounds, of 15 reps and 2 sets. Monday's are deltoids and hamstrings. Wednesday's are super-sets of chest and biceps, and back and triceps. Friday's are quads.

Because of her physique and generic makeup, Kari says her achilles heels are "my chest and calves because those muscles just don't build up - they're way too skinny." Indeed Kari has had to knock herself out to acquire what little muscle mass she does have so her legs don't look too thin. "I do about 30-40 calve raises both from sitting calf machine and standing positions, for 2-3 sets. I can't walk afterwards. I have to wear high heels because my heels can't touch the ground." For pecs, it's the usual 3 sets of incline press, bench press and dumbbell fly's using 30-40 pound weights.

Kari is most proud of her straight and even shoulders. "Definately. They get really defined quickly because they have good muscle memory. Even if I'm not working out, I know I can always bare my shoulders and feel really sexy. I do a lot of different deltoid exercises for them." These include seated dumbbell presses, upright rows and shrugs.

And her smart workout goes a long way toward keeping her trim despite the junk food parches. "I've become a drive-through connoisseur lately, but Skip is getting me back on the right routine. I try not to beat myself up about it, though, because my body knows what it wants and I inevitably go back to the health routine. Lately if I need a quick fix, I get a Power Boost Jamba Berry-Berry Shake Juice."

She's not one to count calories or fat grams either. Good thing because her guilty pleasure can really pack on the pounds. "Lately I've been eating one-pound boxes of Sees chocolate candies in two days. I haven't put on weight but my blood sugar goes bonkers. I never allowed myself chocolate as a teen and all through my twenties; I never went there. Now I love it. The endorphine it releases are incredible." Other than this indulgence, Kari's mealplans are a loose interpretation of The Zone: 40% carbs, 30% protein and 30% fat. "I really believe that starchy carbs like potatoes, rice and bread should be limited and lean protein is great. I was a vegetarian for a long time but I now find meat gives me a more aggressive edge".

Kari's heightened health awareness means taking a daily iron supplement, multi vitamin, barley green "an amazing source of chlorophyll" and Vitamin E. Is there any time left to treat herself like a princess? "I have a hard time doing that, especially lately because I've been negligent of my own feelings. One of my favorite Skip Tips is to take 30 seconds every hour to do a personal inventory. You say OK, how am I feeling, where am I at, what do I need....30 seconds an hour is really hard to do. He also gives me the word of the day. My favorite one and the one I try to reaffirm everyday is to live for the process and not the event. Instead of setting goals and striving for them, which I thought was always the way to do it, now I focus on the personal process itself for each day." These self affirmations also help reduce daily stress.

"There's a lot of pressure and influence from other people in this business. When I was 22, my male record producer talked me into breast implants by dangling that carrot in front of me.- I finally gave into the pressure. That's why I named my new record, "Shiny". Tinsletown can be a total distraction with shiny objects - the gold, the money and the fame. It takes us away from who we are and what's really important."

What's the most absurd thing ever printed about her? "That I was doing drugs. A lot of people see this energy in me that's very real - I have a very strong life evergy, but I also run to that force for security. Sometimes I can over compensate with it. What can I say? I have a natural lust for life."
